Congratulations. You’ve led your company, team and self though the most unprecedented of years.
As you push 2020 to a close, and take a much deserved break before launching 2021, consider adding this one additional thing to your task list; Examine who your most valuable players have been this year and list the qualities that make each of them exceptional.
These qualities are the skills that enabled a smooth pivot, lifted spirits, marched everyone forward, kept people accountable and made people want to show up. Was it their empathy? Their adaptability? Is it because they were scrappy and resourceful? Or, was it their ability to be the calm in the storm, always maintaining a future vision, and clearly communicating the plan ahead.
Take this list and label it HIGH VALUE CHARACTER TRAITS.
Now, put that list in a drawer and go take a break.
In 2021 pull out that list again. Reference it and leverage it for assessing talent and for developing yourself and your team. Use it as an interview tool to understand if your candidate has these high value character traits. Share your list with the recruiters you work with, explaining these are the traits that the most successful people in your company have and that you look to hire against. Use this list for employee development, for team building exercises, or as a platform to coach employees up. Use it for yourself, recognizing you may rate a 10 against many of the qualities but there are always opportunities to improve.
This year, more than any other year, is the year that put a spotlight on what exceptional talent means. Capture it while it is still fresh and carry it forward into your work and culture.
